Money & relationships
I’m a saver. My partner is a “we deserve it.”
From: Joint Account, Separate Planets
Dear Gym Bear, I want a bigger safety net. My partner wants us to stop postponing every fun thing. Every money conversation turns into a tiny courtroom. How do we get back on the same side?— Joint Account, Separate Planets
A little perspective from Gym Bear
Dear Separate Planets, retire the courtroom. Neither of you needs to win cross-examination over a takeaway order.
Try a short conversation that begins with what money makes possible for each of you. “A buffer helps me sleep” and “I want us to make memories” tell you more than “You always spend” or “You never enjoy anything.” Take turns, and agree to pause if it gets heated.
Then work on one shared decision: a buffer target, a planned experience, or an amount each person can spend freely within your means. Use numbers you can both see and choose a date to revisit them. One workable agreement is a good first session. You don’t have to solve your entire financial future over dinner.
In your corner, Gym Bear
Each write down one thing you want money to protect and one thing you want it to make possible.
