Saving & spending
My emergency fund keeps having emergencies.
From: One Flat Tire from Square One
Dear Gym Bear, I finally saved a little money. Then the car broke down. Now my balance is back where it started and I feel like I failed. How am I supposed to build a cushion when life keeps sitting on it?— One Flat Tire from Square One
A little perspective from Gym Bear
Dear Flat Tire, your savings did their job. A cushion that catches you is a working cushion. It doesn’t stop being useful because you landed on it.
Start again with a target based on a surprise you’ve actually faced. Keep emergency money somewhere safe and easy to access. A small automatic transfer can help if it fits your cash flow; check the timing so it doesn’t leave you short for bills or trigger overdraft fees.
Separate predictable-but-irregular costs, like annual insurance or routine car maintenance, from genuine surprises when you can. A little money set aside for those bills gives your emergency fund fewer shifts to cover. Rebuilding counts as progress, too.
In your corner, Gym Bear
Name one irregular bill coming up. Divide its expected cost by the paydays left before it’s due.
