Feeling behind
Does saving a tiny amount even count?
From: Team Five Dollars
Dear Gym Bear, the advice always seems to assume I have hundreds left over. Some weeks I have five dollars. Is there any point, or am I just rearranging loose change?— Team Five Dollars
A little perspective from Gym Bear
Dear Team Five Dollars, small weights still belong in the gym. Five dollars won’t solve an income shortfall, but it can be a real contribution to a small buffer. Both things can be true.
Don’t skip essentials to hit an arbitrary savings streak. If money is tight, first look at what’s creating the gap: housing, debt costs, unpredictable hours, or another pressure. A benefits check, a payment arrangement, or an income change may matter far more than another tiny cut.
When there is room, set a modest goal with a concrete purpose. Measure the habit against your own situation, and change it when your circumstances change. This bear is very much against assigning moral value to a bank balance.
In your corner, Gym Bear
Choose a small buffer goal tied to a real expense. Save only what fits after this week’s essentials.
